On this day, the Alabama Senate agreed to get funding for a school for Black students. Legislation passed for the establishment of the “Negro Normal School of Tuskegee" with an appropriation of $2000. Booker T. Washington was recruited as the Principal and only teacher. The school began as a one-room shanty with 30 students and grew to become a sprawling 3000+ student University.
