On this day in 2015, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) ended funding for new experiments on chimpanzees. The NIH, pressured by animal rights groups, accepted new guidelines requiring that only research directly related to human health where no other research options were available, could use chimpanzees. However, when in 2015 the US Fish and Wildlife Service finalized rules that listed chimpanzees as endangered, all biomedical studies on chimpanzees were prohibited.
