National Barrier Awareness Day is an occasion to recognize and fight against the many barriers, both visible and invisible, that people with disabilities face. On this day, we are reminded to work to eliminate the social, legal, economic and physical barriers that confront individuals with disabilities.

  • Disability Social History Project contains a wealth of information, including a list of “Famous and Not So Famous” people with disabilities, a timeline and history of the word “handicapped”.
  • Disability Visibility website centering the work of Alice Wong, author of Disability Visibility, an anthology that gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the intersectionality, passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now. It looks to the future and the past with hope and love.
