On this date in 1871, President Grant declared martial law over KKK violence in nine counties in South Carolina by suspending the writ of habeas corpus to bypass biased White judges. The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) is a hate group formed in 1865 in the South to resist Reconstruction and terrorize Black people and those who supported them.
