First Day of Banned Books Week which was launched in 1982 in response to the sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982, according to the American Library Association.

  • Dear Banned Author Writing Campaign, sponsored by the American Librarian Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. During Banned Books Week, readers are encouraged to write to their favorite banned or challenged authors, sharing what their stories meant to them.
  • Celebrating the Freedom to Read, sponsored by the Banned Books Week Coalition. Information and resources including links to videos, related to increasing awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read, and the movement against book censorship.
