On this date in 1831, Nat Turner, an enslaved Black man, was executed. He was convicted on leading a rebellion of about 75 enslaved people in Southampton, Virginia. 200 Black people and 55 White people died in this revolt. Nat Turner and 16 other men were hanged in a public show of strength by White authorities.
