Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of a small Mexican militia over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Despite this victory, France eventually defeated Mexican forces and occupied the country for three more years. This holiday has become more popular in the US than in Mexico, partly because of corporate America’s desire to make money off the Latinx consumer market.
