Mamie Till Mobley, educator and mother of Emmett Till who was murdered in Mississippi, was born on this day in 1921.

  • Mamie was born in Mississippi, moving to Chicago at an early age. It was there that her son, Emmett was brutally murdered by White supremacists in 1955 while visiting his cousins. Mamie chose an open casket funeral for her son to showcase to the world the brutality of her young son’s murder. After the acquittal of two of Emmett’s murderers, she continued to fight for justice and civil rights for Black people.
  • The new historical drama film, Till, is based on the true story of activist Mamie Hill. Directed by Chinonye Chukwu.
