On this date in 1991, Audre Lorde was named Poet Laureate of New York.

  • Lorde described herself as a “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet” and dedicated her life and work to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. She was highly respected for her contributions to feminist theory, critical race studies, and queer theory. She was the co-founder of The Kitchen Table Women of Color Press and an editor of the lesbian journal Chrysalis.
