On this day in 1971, inmates at the state prison in Attica, New York were frustrated with chronic overcrowding, censorship of letters and deplorable and dehumanizing living conditions, erupted in the most deadly prison uprising in the United States. It resulted in 43 deaths (39 killed by the police and prison guards who fired indiscriminately into an area where hostages were held.
