Who are You? Which house? These are questions Dr. Sascha McKeon's students answer in her gamified science course.
Instructors struggle to engage students with content while maintaining course integrity. Gamification provides an autonomous environment, decreases content intimidation, and increases fidelity. In order to choose how they are assessed in one of Dr. McKeon's courses, students align their strengths, skills, time, and personality with one of the four houses based on the Harry Potter books. For example, exams and homework are weighted differently depending on which house a student is in. Her evaluation of her course has shown that students are more engaged and motivated with choice.
