This four-week course is based on Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower. Participants can choose to read either the original novel or the graphic novel. Published in 1993, Parable of the Sower is a futuristic story that takes place between 2024 and 2027. When global climate change and economic crises lead to social chaos, 15-year-old Lauren Olamina is no longer protected by the walls around her community. The daughter of a preacher, she develops her own religion and must make her voice heard in order to protect her loved ones from the imminent disasters others have stubbornly ignored. Butler’s startling vision of human destiny has rendered it a dystopian classic in its relevance to today.
