Communication skills impact our relationships with students, other staff, administration, and students’ families. In this 4-week book study, educators will discuss the strategies and examples in Active Listening Techniques: 30 Practical Tools to Hone Your Communication Skills by Nixaly Leonardo. From the book description, readers will be able to:

  • Learn the basics―Discover the importance of paraphrasing, nonverbal cues, emotional labeling, mirroring, validation, and other fundamental techniques.

  • Put your skills to use―Each communication tool includes an illustrative anecdote, as well as digestible strategies to help you apply the concept to your everyday life.

  • Manage conflict―Learn how invaluable being an active listener is when it comes to navigating difficult or emotionally charged situations.

There will be four live discussions and optional opportunities to reflect deeper and earn additional PDUs. OEA will mail copies of the book to those who need one. Enrollees who participate in at least two of the live sessions are welcome to keep the book. Enrollees who participate in less than two live sessions can purchase the book or return it to OEA.
